about

The centrepiece of this album is the English composer Philip Sparke’s monumental Music Of The Spheres. The piece reflects the composer’s fascination with the origins of the universe and deep space and it is a fantastic vehicle for the multi-layered sound palate offered by the ensemble of wind, brass and percussion instruments. It was composed in 2004 and is a major work in the literature of brass and wind bands around the world.
The title, Music of the Spheres, comes from a theory formulated by Pythagoras; that the cosmos was ruled by the same laws that govern the ratios between the frequencies of the notes in a musical scale. Pythagoras also believed that the planets each produced a musical note which combined to weave a continuous heavenly melody.
Music of the Spheres opens with a French horn solo called t = 0, a name given by some scientists to the moment of the Big Bang, when time and space were created. Following this is a depiction of the Big Bang itself, as the entire universe bursts out from a single point, the final note of the horn solo.
The opening is followed by a slower section called The Lonely Planet which features some wonderful intertwining of woodwind and saxophone melodies. It leads to the excitement of Asteroids and Shooting Stars depicting both the benign and dangerous objects that fly through space. With bell-like sounds the sections Music Of The Spheres and Harmonia, based on Pythagoras’s six planetary musical notes, transform into a mystical melody begun by the English horn. After building to a climax the final section The Unknown explodes to an exciting and chaotic cosmic ending.
