about

The Washington Post is one of John Philip Sousa’s most well-known patriotic marches. It was written in 1889, while Sousa was the conductor of the United States Marine Corps Band, to promote an essay competition held by the Washington Post newspaper. The march soon became popular throughout America and Europe particularly because it was adapted to the new dance, the two-step. The popularity of this march helped coin Sousa’s now famous nickname “The March King”. This lively march is one the Band always enjoys playing.
